Perception is about interpreting from experience, and every individual has their own way of perceiving what’s presented to them. This exhibition looks through some common perceptions and touches on themes of communication and sense of personal space. Street photography is a large part of my art practice. My photos are an exploration of our urban environment and our relation to it. They balance a fine line of figurative and abstract ways of viewing our surroundings, drawing our attention to what we all see but mostly ignore.

Areas impacted by a constant state of change are a focus for me. I’m intuitively drawn to these particular types of subjects and take more of a painterly approach when photographing them. I’m using texture, pattern and composition to serve as the dominant visual characteristics of these images.

The photos featured in this show are predominantly from three different series. “Flow of Traffic Theory” is a series inspired by the simplicity and universality of the imagery used on road signs; specifically, signs whose words and symbols have become obscured or distorted in some way. These serve as a statement on how we’ve become desensitized to changes in our language and the ways we communicate.

Photos in the series “Two Wheelers” were all shot at a single location, an underground parking lot. Individual parking stalls are presented as small tableaus, each with a floating bike.

The series “Self Portraits in Public Washrooms” is just as described, providing a new perspective on the artist’s self portrait. But at this series’ root, these photos are a statement on our sense of personal space and what our expectations are for that space.
