DREAMS AND NIGHTMARES

cSPACE, Level 4
February 15 – February 28

Nightmares and Dreams is a collection of photographic works by students in their final year of the Photography program at the Alberta University of the Arts.

This collection explores the images our minds create, using photography to describe the dual nature of "dreams" and "nightmares". Dreams have existed in folklore and religion since the beginning of recorded history. Humanity has always been fascinated by the transient nature of dreams. Our minds conjure impossible experiences that range from beautiful to terrifying, only for them to fade within moments from our waking minds.

A "dream" has come to describe a hope for the future, an unattainable goal, or a waking fantasy. Worst-case scenarios and unexpected horrors are now our "nightmares". Our idea of the world that we see when we sleep is projected onto the real world, using the abstract as a framing device by which we contextualize reality. The ephemeral nature of our dreams gives us distance, while reflecting our fascination with the world of dreams.

In exploring the world of "Nightmares and Dreams", the artists bring their own ideas of the nature of dreams, the fear and joy, and the sadness and relief of waking from them. This collaborative exhibition contains works by ten photographers, each with their own perspective but working towards the same concept, each informed by the works of the others.
